Job Description

Orthopaedic Associates of Maine is hiring a Clinical/Medical Assistant for the Joints Department in Portland, ME.

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for performing a variety of duties in the clinical area, focusing on the delivery of quality patient care. Includes assisting physicians with direct patient care and handling the rooming and intake of patients, casting, injections as assigned, and other clinical duties as assigned by the Clinic Supervisor. The Clinical Assistant demonstrates competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care within their scope of practice and according to organizational policies, accrediting and licensing bodies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Greets all patients in person or via phone in a polite, prompt, and helpful manner while maintaining professional behavior and adherence to organizational values.
  2. Prepares patients for the health care visit by directing and accompanying them to the examining room.
  3. Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, gathers and inputs medical history, collects and inputs information for the history and physical, and confirms the purpose of visit and patient concerns.
  4. Performs preliminary physical tests; blood pressure, weight, and temperature; initiates and inputs patient history summary to be reviewed by the physician.
  5. Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, keeping patient information confidential.
  6. Counsels patients by reviewing physician's orders and questions.
  7. Shares educational materials and information with patients by providing medication and diet information and instructions per supervisor and/or provider guidance.
  8. Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  9. Completes timely records accurately by inputting patient examination, treatment, and test results into the EHR.
  10. Serves and protects the physician or healthcare provider practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and accreditation as applicable.
  11. Practices and promotes infection control practices; applies principles of aseptic technique, standard, universal, and transmission precautions.
  12. Adheres to organizational infection control and PPE policies and procedures.
  13. Maintains confidentiality.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in other areas/locations, when needed.
  • Participates in educational opportunities to maintain certification/license, remain up to date on professional publications, skills, and knowledge as it pertains to role.
  • Enhances practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock, communicating needs to supervisors, and maintaining inventory.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, and calling for repairs, ensuring supervisor is notified.
  • Demonstrates professionalism at all times.
  • Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team, and practice meetings.
  • Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment.
  • Is proactive in identifying, reporting, and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues.
  • Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the clinic.
  • Adheres to organizational, federal, and local HIPAA guidelines and policies and procedures, as required by law.

QUALIFICATIONS
  •  

 

  • Current MA, CNA, Athletic Trainer, Rad Tech, LPN or other relevant clinical credential, certification, with relevant work history.
  • Current license as applicable issued by the State of Maine or eligible for licensure, certification within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Current BLS required or achieved within 3 months of date of hire.
  • Knowledge of and experience in healthcare field, medical office protocols/procedures
  • Skill in performing clinical assistant tasks appropriately.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, physicians, supervisors, and other staff.
  • Skill in time management, prioritizing, and medical care coordination
  • Ability to organize and accomplish tasks to meet changing demands daily.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to project and maintain a professional image.
  • Ability to work independently and excel as part of a team.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Proficient computer skills with knowledge of electronic medical records

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Daily use of computer operating instruments; stationary PC, Laptop PC, keyboard, and mouse
  • Light lifting of paperwork, folders or other general record keeping materials
  • Operation of various office equipment: fax machine, telephone & voice mail system, stationary/lap top computer, e-mail system, scanner, and copier
  • Lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently
  • Walks frequently.
  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Risk of exposure to hazardous conditions and blood borne pathogens
  • Occasional reaching, twisting, bending.
