The GIS Analyst I is an entry-level, technical training role supporting the Ambulance operations of Acadian with delivering GIS-based solutions.
This position will learn to support our Esri ArcGIS Enterprise, which is critical for public safety operations. This full-time role is designed to build foundational IT skills, combining front-end user support (help desk, training, content) with guided back-end administration (learning ArcGIS Server, Portal, Data Store, and enterprise geodatabases).
The Analyst I will partner with senior IT staff (CAD, Networking, Infrastructure, Security, DBAs, etc.) and vendors to learn how to deliver stable, low-latency GIS services for dispatchers, field units, and command staff.
Duties And Responsibilities - ArcGIS Platform Support: Assist senior staff with installing, configuring, upgrading, and hardening ArcGIS Enterprise (ArcGIS Server, Portal, and Data Store); assist with ArcGIS Online administration.
- Availability & Performance: Learn to monitor service health, logs, and usage; assist with tuning services, caching, and resources to support low-latency, 24/7 operations.
- Data & Recovery Participation: Learn data stewardship practices from the Data team/DBAs. Participate in Windows Server OS-layer and GIS database recovery tests led by the Data team; validate GIS services, maps, and apps post-restore; maintain metadata and perform basic data-quality checks.
- Security Administration: Assist with managing roles/permissions, sharing models, SAML/OAuth integration, TLS certificate renewals, and audit evidence in coordination with Security/IT.
- Integrations: Assist in supporting GIS integrations with CAD, alerts, AVL/vehicle tracking, and live incident feeds; learn to maintain dashboards and web apps for situational awareness.
- User Support: Serve as a primary GIS help desk point for dispatch/field users; address basic access/map issues; escalate complex issues to senior staff or Esri support as needed.
- Training & Documentation: Develop user-friendly how-tos; assist in maintaining clear runbooks, admin guides, and system documentation.
- Projects: Assist with gathering requirements; learn to configure/publish services, web maps, and apps (e.g., Dashboards, ExperienceBuilder, Field Apps); support testing and cutovers.
- Reporting & Planning: Help gather and publish metrics on uptime, usage, and capacity; contribute to GIS roadmap and DR planning discussions with the Data team.
- Compliance: Follow all approved controls for sensitive datasets and adhere to all IT change/incident/problem processes.
Qualifications - Education & Foundational Skills: Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. (Relevant internship experience or 1+ years of basic GIS experience may substitute for a degree.)
- GIS Knowledge: Foundational understanding of Esri ArcGIS concepts (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, web maps, feature services). Academic project experience is acceptable.
- Technical Aptitude: A strong, demonstrated interest in and foundational knowledge of core IT concepts. Must be highly motivated to learn Windows Server OS, networking, security, and database fundamentals. Basic troubleshooting skills are required.
- Public Safety Interest: A strong interest in supporting public safety (9-1-1, police, fire) is highly desirable. Must understand the urgency and reliability required for first responders.
- Communication and Support: Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical issues into user-friendly terms. Experience providing customer service or help desk support is a plus. Strong documentation skills are required.
- Organization and Reliability: Ability to manage tasks and stay detail-oriented, especially under time-sensitive conditions. Must have a focus on system reliability and data accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications - Python Scripting: Familiarity with Python (ArcPy or ArcGIS API for Python) for streamlining tasks.
- SQL & Database Concepts: Basic understanding of SQL queries. Familiarity with database concepts (SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL) is a plus.
- Cloud Concepts: Exposure to or interest in cloud environments (AWS, Azure) and cloud computing concepts.
- Real-Time GIS Technologies: Interest in real-time GIS capabilities such as ArcGIS GeoEvent Server or real-time dashboard integrations.
- Esri Apps: Familiarity with Esri applications (ArcGIS Dashboards, Survey123, ArcGIS Experience Builder, etc.).
- Certifications: Relevant academic or vendor certifications (e.g., Esri Foundation, CompTIA A+/Net+) are a plus but not required.
Training Requirements We value continuous development and reward employees for achieving these required training milestones. Initial salary increases are tied to these training milestones and approval from supervisors, managers, and directors, with a minimum four-month gap between each raise to ensure fairness and foster steady career growth. The selected candidate will be excluded from annual cost-of-living adjustments until they have successfully completed the following training milestones.
- Complete HDI Customer Service Representative (HDI-CSR) certification

- Upon successful completion of this educational milestone and approval from team leadership, the job title will change to GIS Analyst II.
