Under the direction of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, CF, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic is assigned to the Garage and is responsible for the supervision of incarcerated people.
Inspects equipment to locate and determine necessary repairs, maintains and repairs automobiles, trucks, forklifts, heavy equipment, pumps, air compressors, diesel and gasoline engines, and similar equipment. Constructs new special equipment or modifies existing equipment including body frames and running gear to meet institutional needs. Leads and works with incarcerated worker crews in the repair and/or replacement of equipment and related systems. Makes installation of or repairs to special equipment; operates and maintains tools used in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment. Estimates repair costs. Has knowledge of operating the Smog testing machine and scanner. Instructs operators in the proper operation and servicing of equipment; performs minor welding and brazing work; maintains simple records and makes reports. Prepares and maintains current timekeeping records of the incarcerated workers supervised.

San Quentin Rehab Center is California’s oldest and best-known correctional institution, which was established on the site currently known as Point San Quentin, in July of 1852, as an answer to the rampant lawlessness in California at the time. The prison rests overlooking the bay on 432 acres and is located just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the county of Marin. The walled prison is made up of four (4) large cell blocks (West, South, North, and East Block), one (1) maximum security cell block (the Adjustment Center), Central Health Care Service Building, a medium security dorm setting and a minimum-security firehouse.
