Job Description

Modern Law’s Legal Clinic provides accessible, limited-scope family law services to clients who may not be able to afford the full representation of an attorney. As a Law Student Intern within the Clinic, you will gain hands-on experience under the supervision of experienced attorneys while contributing meaningfully to the Clinic’s mission of delivering client-centered, high-quality family law assistance. The role offers you exposure to real-world family law practice, client interaction, document drafting, and professional mentorship in a culture rooted in creativity, optimism, bravery, and empathy. Learning Outcomes & Benefits

  • Gain substantive exposure to family law practice and procedural rules under supervision.
  • Develop practical skills in client interviewing, drafting pleadings, conducting research, and case management.
  • Participate in a mentorship program with senior attorneys and legal teams.
  • Build a professional network in a forward-looking family law firm committed to innovation and culture.
  • Receive meaningful feedback and increase readiness for post-graduation employment in law.
  • Contribution to the Clinic’s access-to-justice mission and opportunity to make a tangible difference for clients.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the onboarding of clinic clients: gathering facts, reviewing documents, and supporting attorney consultations.
  • Draft and prepare family law-related documents under supervision (e.g., petitions, responses, status statements, RMC statements) as part of the Clinic’s document-prep services.
  • Conduct legal research on family law issues, statutes, rules of procedure, and relevant case law to support Clinic attorneys.
  • Participate in virtual or in-person limited scope representation activities (e.g., assisting with hearings, motion calendar appearances) as appropriate under student-certified practice rules.
  • Attend internal team meetings, mentorship sessions, and CLE-style trainings to enhance legal and professional skills.
  • Maintain accurate case files, track deadlines, assist with calendaring, and ensure compliance with Clinic processes and confidentiality standards.
  • Reflect on learning experiences, receive feedback from supervising attorneys, and integrate lessons into your development as a future licensed lawyer.
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school (2L or 3L preferred) and in good academic standing.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills; attention to detail is essential.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to interact professionally with clients, team members, and supervising attorneys.
  • Interest in family law (divorce, custody, protection orders) and/or access-to-justice work.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, innovative legal environment.
  • Commitment to the values of Modern Law: creativity, optimism, bravery, empathy.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt; flexibility in in-office and remote components if applicable.
About Company: Modern Law is a launchpad for ambitious family law professionals. We provide exceptional training, mentorship, and resources so you can grow fast and build confidence in your craft. You’ll join a collaborative, supportive team with the autonomy to run your practice your way—no micromanaging, just real trust. We have more high-quality work than you can handle, so you can focus on advocacy, not client hunting. And our flexible billable requirements adapt to your goals—whether you want to maximize income or maintain balance, we’ll back your definition of success. Here, you bring the drive. We provide the rocket fuel.
